The Challenges of Enterprise Cloud Migration: Successfully Navigating a Bewildering Landscape

Long before cloud computing was a concept, enterprises and service providers grappled with the difficulty of transitioning an existing infrastructure from one platform to another. The complexity of any IT project stems from the breadth of technical, functional and business areas that are impacted. There are also organizational and cultural impacts that can become huge impediments to a successful migration if they are not acknowledged, understood and managed effectively.
 
Many IT projects fail because of poorly understood requirements, lack of systematic planning and inadequate business cases. But in reality, these factors are symptoms of a more fundamental core issue, namely that migrating an existing enterprise IT application to a new IT environment is a specialized business activity that is difficult to execute unless you have significant experience and employ a disciplined approach. Large-scale migrations aren’t everyday occurrences, so the managerial know-how is hard to retain. 
 
As the next link in the evolutionary IT chain, cloud computing simply takes these already existing challenges and extends them. The cloud service opportunity is inherently complex because it is not one service with a specific definition, but rather it is an enabling technology that delivers on-demand computing or data storage via the Internet. The Yankee Group reports that 55 percent of IT decision-makers cite the complexities of migration and cost as barriers to cloud adoption.
