"Cell Phone Gridlock" - Fortune Magazine cites TMNG Global

Mar 22, 2009

Smartphone users think congested airwaves are responsible for slow service.  But many culprits cause the problems that bedevil all wireless operators.

THE PROBLEM
Cellphone service has always been bad in big cities, and the problem is getting worse. Why? Even today's 3G broadband networks were not designed to accomodate the volume and nature of traffic geneterated by tens of thousands of people simultaneously using smart devices like the iPhone, which generate more traffic than 30 basic cellphones. Upgrades to more robust 4G systems will help but won't necessarily break these bottlenecks.
